The event is free and open to the public, sponsored by Oklahoma Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities. A celebration of the life of beloved African American composer Scott Joplin, whose ragtime compositions paved the way for jazz. Through his Chautauqua historical presentation of Scott Joplin, members of the audience will gain insights into the man behind the music and his place in history Following a brief intermission, Donald Ryan will take the stage to perform a variety of Joplin pieces. Pace will provide the first segment of the program. The story of the popular, critically acclaimed music of Scott Joplin shares a definitive portrait of a man who was part of the first post-Civil War generation. At the 7:30 event, will be a combination lecture-concert featuring Chautauqua historic presenter Charles Everett Pace and pianist Donald Ryan. Joplin, known during his lifetime as the King of Ragtime, composed some of the most well-known musical pieces of the era, including The Entertainer. While racism was inescapably a major factor in Joplin’s life and career, presenting this facet of his biography to young children can be problematic. The event will include concerts by ECU students and faculty throughout the day. The last few pages show Joplin publishing his Maple Leaf Rag and other pieces and becoming a renown composer, the King of Ragtime Writers. Scott Joplins determination allowed him to bring life to the Ragtime. Standing as great music in its own right, Joplin’s ragtime, with its syncopated rhythms, also became a major influence upon and a forerunner of Jazz. Scott Joplin, the King of Ragtime was a revolutionary musician of the 20th century. Joplin, known during his lifetime as the “King of Ragtime,” composed some of the most well-known musical pieces of the era, including The Entertainer, and the Maple Leaf Rag.
